DESCRIPTION: \nNote: April 24\, 2022 Messiah of the Mountains celebrated th
e dedication of the new sanctuary we enjoy today.\nWe gather each Sunday a
t 11:00 am for worship by singing hymns\, hearing readings from the bible\
, praying together and a celebration of Holy Communion. Communion is the s
piritual bread our bodies need to live. All are invited to join us at the
Lord's table to be fed by his heavenly food\, There are no strangers in Go
d’s house\, and if you choose to worship with us\, we would be honored by
your presence.\n \nIntroduction\nToday is sometimes called “Good Shepherd
Sunday.” Jesus is called the “gate” of the sheep in today’s gospel. The ri
sen Christ opens the way to abundant life. He anoints our heads with oil a
nd guides us beside the still waters of our baptism. Each Sunday he spread
s a feast before us amid the world’s violence and war. We go forth to be s
igns of the resurrection and extend God’s tender care to all creation.\nPr
ayer of the Day\nO God our shepherd\, you know your sheep by name and lead
us to safety through the valleys of death. Guide us by your voice\, that
we may walk in certainty and security to the joyous feast prepared in your
house\, through Jesus Christ\, our Savior and Lord\, who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit\, one God\, now and forever.\nAmen.\n \nFirs
t Reading: \nActs 2:42-47 Today’s reading is a description of life in the
community following Peter’s sermon on the day of Pentecost\, when the Spir
it was poured out on God’s people. The new community is sustained in worsh
ip and fellowship\, shares what they have\, and ensures that everyone has
enough.\n \nPsalm:  23\nThe Lord is my shepherd\; I shall not be in want.
(Ps. 23:1)\nSecond Reading:  \n1 Peter 2:19-25 Doing the right things does
not guarantee that one will not experience difficulties\, hardships\, rej
ection\, or even suffering. Here Christ is presented as the model for our
path of endurance and loyalty to God\, particularly amid adversity.\n \nGo
spel:  John 10:1-10\nJesus uses an image familiar to the people of his day
to make a point about spiritual leadership. Those who listen to Jesus are
led to abundant life. [Jesus said:]\n1  “Very truly\, I tell you\, anyone
who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way
is a thief and a bandit.\n2  The one who enters by the gate is the shephe
rd of the sheep.\n3  The gatekeeper opens the gate for him\, and the sheep
hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.\n4  Wh
en he has brought out all his own\, he goes ahead of them\, and the sheep
follow him because they know his voice.\n5  They will not follow a strange
r\, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of stran
gers.”\n6  Jesus used this figure of speech with them\, but they did not u
nderstand what he was saying to them.  \n7  So again Jesus said to them\,
“Very truly\, I tell you\, I am the gate for the sheep.\n8  All who came b
efore me are thieves and bandits\, but the sheep did not listen to them.\n
9  I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved and will come in and
go out and find pasture.\n10  The thief comes only to steal and kill and d
estroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”\n \nAfter
the Sermon\, Holy Communion will be offered. Come as you are\, the gift of
the Table of the Lord has been prepared as Jesus has requested and now we
are invited to the meal. Come to the table like Peter\, with m ore enthus
iasm than resolve and like James and John\, disappointed and the prioritie
s of God’s reign. Come to the table like Martha\, hosting and leading with
confidence like Mary\, full of love and grief. Come to the table like Jud
as\, disillusioned and rebellious and like Mary Magdalene\, faithful till
the end. Come to the table\, because it is God who invites us and it’s God
’s will that those who want to should meet God here.\nBlessing for the day
(Our blessing is an adaptation of a Franciscan Prayer)\nMay God bless us
with discomfort at a Easy answers\, half truths and superficial leadership
s so that we may live out God’s will deep in our heartland in our world.\n
May god bless with anger at injustice\, oppression and exploration and the
environments that we may work for justice\, freedom and peace.\nMay God b
less us with tears to shed for those who suffer from pain\, rejection\, hu
nger and war so that we may reach out with hands and hearts to help them\,
walk with them and turn their pain into hope and joy.\nAnd may God bless
us with enough foolishness to believe that we can make a difference in thi
s world\, so that we can do what others claim cannot be done. To bring jus
tice\, peace\, hope and love to all children\, the poor and all others in
any need.\nGod be your comfort\, your strength\;\nGod be your hope and sup
port\;\nGod be your light and your way\; and the blessing of God Creator\,
Redeemer and Giver of Life\, remain with you now and forever. https://www
