DESCRIPTION: \nWe gather each Sunday at 11:00 am for worship by singing hym
ns\, hearing readings from the bible\, praying together and a celebration
of Holy Communion. Communion is the spiritual bread our bodies need to liv
 e. All are invited to join us at the Lord's table to be fed by his heavenl
y food\, There are no strangers in God’s house\, and if you choose to wors
hip with us\, we would be honored by your presence.\n \nIntroduction\nPent
ecost derives its name from the Jewish festival celebrating the harvest an
d the giving of the law on Mount Sinai fifty days after Passover. Fifty da
ys after Easter\, we celebrate the Holy Spirit as God’s presence within an
d among us. In Acts the Spirit arrives in rushing wind and flame\, bringin
g God’s presence to all people. Paul reminds us that though we each have d
ifferent capacities\, we are unified in the Spirit that equips us with the
se gifts. Jesus breathes the Holy Spirit on his disciples\, empowering the
m to forgive sin. We celebrate that we too are given the breath of the Hol
y Spirit and sent out to proclaim God’s redeeming love to all the world.\n
Prayer of the Day\nO God\, on this day you open the hearts of your faithfu
l people by sending into us your Holy Spirit. Direct us by the light of th
at Spirit\, that we may have a right judgment in all things and rejoice at
all times in your peace\, through Jesus Christ\, your Son and our Lord\,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit\, one God\, now and fore
 ver.\nAmen.\nFirst Reading: \nActs 2:1-21 Pentecost was a Jewish harvest f
estival that marked the fiftieth day after Passover. Luke portrays the Hol
y Spirit being poured out upon the disciples before the gathered and aston
ished people assembled in Jerusalem for the festival. Filled with the Spir
it\, the disciples were able to witness to the power of Christ’s resurrect
ion.\nPsalm: 104:24-34\, 35b\nSend forth your Spirit and renew the face of
the earth. (Ps. 104:30)\nSecond Reading:  \n1 Corinthians 12:3b-13 Paul i
s helping the Corinthians understand the relationship between our God-give
n unity and Spirit-created diversity. The Spirit creates the unity of fait
h and gives all Christians diverse gifts for the common benefit of all. We
need one another’s diverse spiritual gifts because the same Spirit has gi
ven them to each person for the common good.\nGospel:  John 20:19-23\nThe
risen Jesus appears to his disciples\, offering them a benediction\, a com
mission\, and the gift of the Holy Spirit.\n19  When it was evening on tha
t day\, the first day of the week\, and the doors were locked where the di
sciples were\, for fear of the Jews\, Jesus came and stood among them and
said\, “Peace be with you.”\n20  After he said this\, he showed them his h
ands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.\n21
Jesus said to them again\, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me
\, so I send you.”\n22  When he had said this\, he breathed on them and sa
id to them\, “Receive the Holy Spirit.\n23  If you forgive the sins of any
\, they are forgiven them\; if you retain the sins of any\, they are retai
ned.”\n \nAfter the Sermon\, Holy Communion will be offered. Come as you a
re\, the gift of the Table of the Lord has been prepared as Jesus has requ
ested and now we are invited to the meal. Come to the table like Peter\, w
ith m ore enthusiasm than resolve and like James and John\, disappointed a
nd the priorities of God’s reign. Come to the table like Martha\, hosting
and leading with confidence like Mary\, full of love and grief. Come to th
e table like Judas\, disillusioned and rebellious and like Mary Magdalene\
, faithful till the end. Come to the table\, because it is God who invites
us and it’s God’s will that those who want to should meet God here.\nBles
sing for the day (Our blessing is an adaptation of a Franciscan Prayer)\nM
ay God bless us with discomfort at a Easy answers\, half truths and superf
icial leaderships so that we may live out God’s will deep in our heartland
in our world.\nMay god bless with anger at injustice\, oppression and exp
loration and the environments that we may work for justice\, freedom and p
eace.\nMay God bless us with tears to shed for those who suffer from pain\
, rejection\, hunger and war so that we may reach out with hands and heart
s to help them\, walk with them and turn their pain into hope and joy.\nAn
d may God bless us with enough foolishness to believe that we can make a d
ifference in this world\, so that we can do what others claim cannot be do
ne. To bring justice\, peace\, hope and love to all children\, the poor an
d all others in any need.\nGod be your comfort\, your strength\;\nGod be y
our hope and support\;\nGod be your light and your way\; and the blessing
of God Creator\, Redeemer and Giver of Life\, remain with you now and fore
